GREENLAND
SEPTEMBER 2017

Day 1:  Reykjavík

Arrival at Keflavik airport, then transfer to a hotel in Reykjavík.

Dinner and overnight in Reykjavík.

Day 2: Reykjavík – Kulusuk – Tasiilaq

Quick morning flight from Iceland to East Greenland. This photographer’s Arctic utopia is a sparsely populated country where interconnecting
roadways are virtually non-existent and folks travel primarily by water, ice and air. The vibrant indigenous Inuit culture in this eastern region is alive and well and relies primarily on hunting as their main source of income.

We will land in Kulusuk, located in the Ammassalik fjord in the Southeast. Situated on a small rocky island between jagged mountains and extensive fjords, this beautiful Greenlandic village is surrounded by icebergs and the glittering sea.

After our flight, we will will board a chartered boat taking us to our hotel in Tasiilaq from where we will embark on private boat day tours during our stay here. Located on the Ammassalik Island separated from the mainland by Sermilik Fjord and Ikaasartivaq Strait, Tasiilaq is considered the most picturesque village in Greenland. Overlooking
the open North Atlantic Ocean, this quaint settlement is the largest town on the
Eastern Coast of Greenland with 1930 inhabitants. On the way to Tasiilaq we will stop at the Aputsiaq Glacier.

Overnight at Hotel Angmagssaliq.

Day 3:  Knud Rasmussen Glacier

We rise early to travel to Ikateq, a deserted village where we will explore a rusty old American base that creates a contrast to the beautiful wilderness scenery surrounding it.

From Ikateq, we sail to Knud Rasmussen glacier where we stop to photograph for about two hours. The Knud Rasmussen glacier is more than three kilometers long and is approximately 900 meters in width. Because of the glacier activities, the Sermiliqaq Fjord is coloured with sediments, giving it a very distinctive milky blue color. The place is beautiful and perfect for capturing photos.

There are many large glaciers calving in the area near Tasiilaq, among other places in Sermilikfjorden. A boat trip out here to one of the settlements reveals the wonder of nature with an abundance of icebergs floating alongside you as you sail. During the boat trip, you are given a compelling demonstration of the scale of the icebergs towering over the boat.

Dinner and overnight at Hotel Angmagssaliq

Day 4: Ammassalik Fjord – Ikasagtivaq Fjord

The landscape of the Ammassalik district is exceptionally beautiful, and is like no other in the entire Arctic. The district is full of lakes, large and steep mountains, green valleys, long rivers and huge glaciers. The area is largely uninhabited and breath-taking in its purity. Our boat tour departs at 9AM from the harbor, and we will sail along the Ammassalik Fjord. From there, we will continue through the deep fjord Ikasagtivaq, to the settlement Tinit (Tinitiqilaaq).

Stopover for lunch and photographing on the shore of the ice fjord. From the settlement, you have a great view to the northern mountains and one of the big glaciers of Ammassalik Island. Whales are very common in the sea and fjords of Ammassalik. The likelihood of seeing them is high, and a normal boat trip along the coastline and in the fjords can turn into a real whale safari.

Dinner and overnight in Hotel Angmagssaliq.

Day 5: Ikateq Settlement

Depart early to sail in the direction of Semmerlik, an ice fjord. Our first stop will be in Ikatek, a deserted settlement. Heading back we explore the various formed icebergs and if we are lucky we might see some seals.

Dinner and overnight in Hotel Angmagssaliq.

Day 6:  Sightseeing to Kuummiut

We will spend the day sightseeing in and around Kuummiut. Kuummiut is situated deep in the Ammassalik Fjord. From the village, the view is awe-inspiring along the fjord all the way to the Denmark Strait. The peaks around Kuummiut are extremely tall and steep.

Dinner and overnight in Hotel Angmagssaliq

Day 7:  Flight from Kulusuk to Reykjavík

Daytime helicopter flight or boat tour (depending on weather) to Kulusuk, followed by flight to Reykjavík in the afternoon.

Dinner and overnight in a hotel in Reykjavík.

Day 8:  Departure

Transfer from Reykjavík to Keflavík airport for departure from Iceland.
